I’ve had a soft spot for Jason Sutherland’s awesome collection of smilies ever since I ran into them for the first time about six years or so ago, and which I promptly proceeded to put to work in my (then) Moveable Type powered blog (some day I’ll have to figure out how to put the few extra cached copies of pages I still have left over from those earlier blogging days into this thing, but that’s another story).

Thanks to Ricardo González, the option of using a different set of smilies than the default ones in a WordPress blog is a real snap: just download his WP Smilies Themer plugin (alternative download location: from the “official” WordPress Plugin Directory) then activate and pick your smilie poison from the handy pop-up sample windows and you’re good to go.

Now, interestingly Ricardo (Rick) did include a pack of Jason’s Santa mod series of smilies, but not Jason’s in my opinion prettier “basic” set.

Obviously, that injustice to smilie lovers worldwide cannot stand. So, without further ado, I present you with the package that I cobbled together with immense effort in a few lost minutes for your smiling pleasure: Jason’s Smilies are here for the WordPress community’s true Jason Smilies fans! I’ve picked the smaller, 15px version instead of the larger ones – even though those are the true “classic” version – because those smaller smilies just fit better, I think, in the context of the average blog.

Note: this pack must be used together with Rick’s Smilie Themer plugin – make sure you have that installed and active, then you can place the folder with the icons and the package config file within its smilies folder. In other words, you need to extract the .zip file, then place the folder named “jason” in the smilies-themer folder, like this:

/wp-content/plugins/smilies-themer/jason
Once you’ve done that, you can go to the plugin setting for the Smilies Themer and there you can select the new Jason’s Smilies that appear in the list of smilies packages; you can preview them just as the others.

Below is a sample of the total of 30 smilies I’ve included, so you can see that they are, yes indeed, quite cute (a few are higher than the standard 15 pixels, and one is wider):

:-)       ;-)       :D

:(             8)       ;-(

Like ‘em? Well then go ahead and download the Jason’s Smilies package from the link below and enjoy!

For the record: this package is released as smileware – smile while enjoying it. The smilies themselves are provided as-is; I used them exactly as Jason made ‘em, and I claim no ownership or rights whatsoever over those cute icons – they’re Jason’s work (as far as I know – either way, it’s not my work, aside from the packaging).

Before I forget: please don’t link to that package directlylink to this page, instead. ¡Muchas gracias!
